Treaty of Paris (1783)

  • the United States, Britain, and France negotiate separate ends to the American Revolution
  • Britain formally recognises US independence
  • US borders run from Spanish Florida, to the Canadian border and the Great Lakes, to the Mississippi River
  • The US also agrees to suggest repayment of debt to British merchants and compensation for Loyalists

Jay's Treaty (1794)

  • Chief Justice John Jay is sent to negotiate with the British for an end to impressment
  • he fails to accomplish this, but the British do agree to leave their Western forts
